Il gruppo viene fondato nel 1970 da Rick Davies (nato a Swindon, Wiltshire, Inghilterra il 22 luglio 1944) e Roger Hodgson (nato a Portsmouth, Hampshire, Inghilterra il 21 marzo 1950).
Dopo una gran gavetta che porta importanti successi e soddisfazioni negli anni 70, si affacciano agli anni 80 con Famous Last Words(1982) e purtroppo sarà l’ultimo prima dell’abbandono di Roger anche se i singoli It’s Raining Again e My Kind of Lady ebbero un buonn successo.
Prima di questo album, toccarono il loro apice della loro carriera nel 1980 con tre pezzi che uscirono nel 1979:

Al termine della lunga tournée che segue la realizzazione dell’album, i Supertramp e Roger Hodgson torneranno in studio separati.
Brother Where You Bound (1985) e In the Eye of the Storm (1984) saranno i punti di arrivo di questa separazione consensuale. Entrambi i lavori otterranno un discreto successo di pubblico e critica ed entrambi i compositori proseguiranno lungo la propria linea musicale sfornando belle canzoni, ma è altrettanto evidente che i tempi di Breakfast in America sono lontani anni luce. La qualità del prodotto non trova l’adeguato riscontro commerciale e i lavori successivi seguono ulteriormente il trend negativo.
Anche Siebenberg pubblica nel 1984 un album intitolato Giants in Our Own Room, che avrà tuttavia scarso successo.
Il calo di popolarità dei Supertramp si ebbe nel 1987 conclusosi con un sonoro insuccesso del ’88.
